The Center for Basic Cancer Research strives to inform the public about cancer, risk reduction, and cancer research.

Presentations are provided locally and across the state and region to inform the public
about cancer and the cancer research taking place at K-State. We offer tours (see photos of a tour) and give presentations to philanthropies, support groups, church groups, and other community groups. Call 785-532-6705 to schedule a tour or presentation.

Community collaboration to educate about cancer is an important part of the center's effort to serve the community, increase cancer awareness, and promote healthy living. The center is proud to be involved with the following groups and projects. Contact Marcia at the cancer center for more information about any of these programs:

  • The Manhattan Cancer Awareness Committee educates about cancers and promotes early detection. Presentations on colon, breast, and other cancers, as well as secondhand smoke, are offered to local groups.
  • The Cancer Resource Network of Manhattan addresses issues that individuals with cancer face locally. One special project, the When A Friend Has Cancer... booklet, offers ideas on how to show you care.
  • Clean Air Manhattan educates about the dangers of secondhand smoke, and assists grassroots efforts to achieve smoke-free indoor air.
  • The Walk Kansas fitness challenge presented by K-State's Research & Extension Service promotes wellness through exercise and good nutrition.
  • The semi-annual Hot Topics: For Women Only health workshop and fair at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City, Kan., offers a comfortable atmosphere for women to learn from local medical experts about such topics as nutrition, breast and colon cancers, osteoporosis, diabetes, cholesterol, sexual health, and teen sex.

A Day With Dr. Waddle is an activity book written especially for children by the Cancer Center staff in 1988 to introduce them to the difficult subject of cancer in an informative yet sensitive manner, as well as teach them about science and good health habits to follow. Dr. Waddle is a duck who happens to be a scientist and welcomes children into his laboratory for a day. Un Día Con el Dr. Waddle, the Spanish version of A Day With Dr. Waddle, was written in order to reach the growing Spanish-speaking population with Dr. Waddle's important lesson.

The George S. Bascom Memorial Workshop Series in Clinical Medicine has been held
since 1996. Distinguished national experts come to K-State to present to faculty, students, and the public about challenges faced in clinical medicine and research.

The Cancer Information Center is a community service provided by the Johnson Cancer Center to help individuals inform themselves about cancers and cancer-related issues. In addition to some written materials, an online computer (with printer) is available for conducting internet researchwith staff assistance, if desired. There are two visitor parking spaces outside the center and guests are always welcome during office hours.

Fundraising events, such as the Rob Regier Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Grand Mère Development, Manhattan, Kansas, and the Sunny 102.5 FM Wildcat Challenge, are held throughout the year to support current research and education programs and the development of new ones. Staff inform the public about the Center's research and education programs and opportunities to contribute to the fight against cancers. These fundraising efforts are coordinated by individuals, organizations, and businesses on behalf of the Center. We are thankful for their generosity and enthusiasm.
