"Plants and animals share mechanisms that act to kill cells either in the course of normal development or because they have become abnormal. Failure of the cell death of abnormal cells is an important cause of cancers. I use the advantages of well-characterized plants to study how external factors overcome normal mechanisms leading to cell death."
