Dr. Ron Madl's research

"Our research interests include identification and isolation of phytochemical components from cereal grains and processing co-products. Collaboration with Drs. D. Takemoto (biochemistry), Wang (human nutrition), Carter (of Wichita State Univ.), and others has revealed a wide range of antioxidant activity in wheat bran. The range of antioxidants is affected by both genetics and environment. Testing with model animal systems has linked the antioxidant levels with capacity to suppress tumor development. We are currently focused on improving analytical methods and identifying the specific compounds responsible for the suppression. Our longer-term goal is to breed high antioxidant wheat varieties and demonstrate their health benefits in humans."
