Dr. Viktor Chikan's laboratory

"Our research focuses on developing novel magnetic nanoparticles that are potentially applicable to treat various forms of cancer via magnetic hyperthermia. During magnetic hyperthermia the magnetic nanoparticles are delivered to the tumor site and heated by application of AC magnetic field, which will lead to heat dissipation to the cancerous cells. The research program aims to develop core/shell nanoparticles that have improved ability to dissipate heat to the cancerous cells and are biocompatible. Understanding the alignment of the magnetic spins and subsequent heat dissipation mechanism of the nanoparticles in the AC magnetic field is important for improving efficiency. AC magnetic measurements and novel terahertz emission experiments will address these questions experimentally and will lead to better understanding of the underlying physical processes during the heat dissipation process."
