Beach Museum : News Releases
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The KSU Department of Apparel,
Textiles, and Interior Design, the Beach Museum of Art and the Women’s
Study Program are collaborating on an interdisciplinary exhibition entitled
Life Passages: Women, Dress and Culture from March 1-June 6, 2004. The
focus of the project is the work of Anita Luvera Mayer, an internationally
renowned artist and weaver. Mayer donated a collection of her work entitled
"Mantles for Women: Rites of Passage" to the KSU Historic Costume
and Textile Museum.
The themes for the exhibition correspond with
the themes of Mayer’s mantles: (1) "Metamorphosis: Celebration
of Life and Death," (2) "Menses," (3) "Marriage,"
(4) "Motherhood," (5) "Menopause," and (6) "Matriarchal
Crone." In addition to the mantles, the exhibition will include historic
costumes, related apparel items, quilts, and ethnic materials from the
Historic Costume and Textiles Museum.
"The concept evolved while I was
creating ‘Metamorphosis,’ a protective cloak completed following
my father’s death. I began to understand and accept the cycle of
life and death. I wonder about the other transition points in a woman’s
life and what I saw as my spiritual right of passage. These mantles are
my answer. They are my celebration of life, of being a woman, of being
an artist," Mayer wrote.
ATID will sponsor a series of lectures by
renowned scholars from across the U.S., as well as publish an exhibition
catalogue featuring an essay by Mayer, objects from the exhibition and
articles derived by the lecturers. The Student Friends of the Beach Museum
of Art will host a series of performances and lectures entitled Shared
Stories: A Performance Series on the Lives of Women, funded through a
Diversity Grant from the KSU Student Governing Association. Faculty members
in the Women’s Studies Program will be integrating the collection
into their Spring 2004 courses and a topics course entitled "Rites
of Passage" will contrast Ms. Mayer’s expression of American
women’s transitions with those of women in other cultures.
