GESINE JANZEN
2003 FRIENDS OF THE BEACH MUSEUM OF ART GIFT PRINT ARTIST

17 April-3 August, 2003

This exhibition features the work of Newton, Kansas native Gesine Janzen, the 2003 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist. Janzen, an assistant professor of art at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, holds a BA in art (1989, Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas); a BFA in printmaking (1993, University of Kansas); a MA in printmaking (1997, University of Kansas); and a MFA in printmaking (1998, University of Iowa). Janzen's work has been featured in numerous group and one-person exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad and can be found in many public, private, and corporate collections, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Spencer Museum of Art, and the Hallmark Collection.

Working primarily in woodcut and lithography, Janzen creates images characterized by bold and expressive drawing and a sensitive and harmonious use of color. Her images such as Summer Project #4 and Summer Project #11 resonate with nostalgia for the present. Janzen's use of fence-like constructions and elements that evoke domestic architectural structures such as houses, porches, and summertime children’s forts imbues her work with a sense of comforting and unconfined containment.
