Beach Museum History

Ross and Marianna Beach

Special recognition must be given to Ross and Marianna Beach, who provided a very generous lead gift.  Ross Beach named the Museum in honor of his wife for their 50th wedding anniversary.  While this was a private decision, those who know Marianna, know what a wonderful and gracious lady she is and were delighted to see her honored in this way.

October 13, 1996 marked a major addition to the cultural life of Kansas State University, Manhattan, and the region, with the opening of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.  The late Professor John F. Helm, of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, started a collection in 1928 with the acquisition of a rare oil painting by Birger Sandzen.  During Professor Helm's tenure the focus of the growing collection was largely on Kansas and prairie artists, a focus which continues today.  Professor Helm added to the art collection, however, in spite of a deep desire and various attempts, a museum building did not become a reality.

It was not until the arrival of President Jon Wefald that a firm commitment was made to build a Museum to house the University's collection and to offer exhibitions and educational programs.  Led by Ruth Ann Wefald, a capital campaign was initiated.  The support and participation of numerous individuals, families, foundations and companies resulted in the campaign goal of $6 million being met.

Making it Possible

Others who need to be recognized for providing substantial support are R.M Seaton, Crosby and Bebe Kemper and UMB Bank, Lou Ann McKinnon Dunn, Caroline Peine and Perry and Virginia Peine, Donna and Jack Vanier, and Orval Hempler.  I must also mention the hundreds of other friends who contributed time, collections, and funds to the founding of the Museum.  All who contribute to the building and subsequent support of the collection, exhibitions, and public programs deserve a loud thank you and everyone should be proud of what is located on the southeast corner of Kansas State University.

This year the Museum received three bequests.  The generosity of Marion Pelton, Gil Johnson, and William Salero in remembering the Beach Museum of Art in their estates is very important and much appreciated.  Their contributions are significant for the future health of the Museum and will allow us to continue to grow and serve our many audiences.  Their funds have been allocated for collection and conservation, exhibition and educational programming, publications and building expansion.
