Our Traditions
At Beta Sigma Psi, we pride ourselves in the activities that define who we are. We have several traditions that many not all be unique among Greek Life, but we would not choose to be doing anything else. Take some time exploring the following paragraphs about our current traditions. Just remember that the traditions to vary some from year to year and some traditions that our distinguished alumni may remember may have been lost to the years. Feel free to stop by any event of ours and enjoy yourself.
With the recent tradition of a nationally ranked collegiate football program, Beta Sigma Psi has developed some traditions of its own. Whether it be the 7:00 a.m. wake up call for tailgating, the raising of the Beta Sig flag high above the tailgate or the 5 hour barbeque before the game, Beta Sigs are never short of pride and support for their Wildcats. Since Game Day is a huge event for the Beta Sig house, the weekends during the fall are never short of excitement and memories. If you are ever in the neighborhood during a home KSU game, bring your purple clothing, grab a hamburger from our tailgate, and enjoy the game.
Another of our traditions is based upon the Lutheran History, specifically in remembrance of the posting of the 95 Thesis. Just as Martin Luther had posted his 95 theses on the doors of the Catholic Church on October 31, 1517, our Lutheran Fraternity reposts the thesis 5 centuries later on the local Catholic Fraternity. The sneak attack occurs late at night while the rival fraternity guards the gates against intruders. Once the posting occurs, the next day’s activities and competitions begin. Traditionally the next morning plays host to an intense game of flag football between the Beta Sigs and the Phi Kaps followed by a barbeque. The original Reformation Day led to splitting Lutherans away from Catholics, but Beta Sigs relive this experience with Catholics and Lutherans on the same playing field.
Although there are many traditions that define who we are as Beta Sigs, one of the more noticeable and routine is the weekly Formal Dinner. Every Wednesday, members from the house dress in suit and tie and relax for the evening's Formal Dinner. The hour-long affair is a chance to catch up on the week’s events and dine in a more upscale environment. From the linen napkins to the glass pepper grinders, Formal Dinner is wonderful chance to enhance your dinner conversation and meal. Beta Sigs have always stressed the importance of manners at dinner and the formal dinner is an excellent place to practice. In fact, every year we bring in a dining etiquette guide to help members with dining experiences ranging from dinners with a date to dinners for a job. If at any time, you wish to come and dine with us at one of our Formal Dinners, contact us so that we may serve you better.
In addition to our traditions with our own members, Beta Sigma Psi also holds a Dad’s Weekend taking place in the fall semester and a Mom’s Weekend in the spring semester. Events for the weekends vary a bit, but have included bowling, trap shooting, putt-putt golfing or the local k-state football or basketball game. Traditionally, the parents love to have a time to meet the other parents as well as have a reason to visit their son.
Finally, a large annual tradition is participation in homecoming. Homecoming was originally developed for alumni of both Kansas State University and Fraternities. Homecoming week is a large competition among the various Greek houses, and culminates in the homecoming football game, at which our alumni hold a large tailgate. During homecoming, fraternities are paired with sororities for festivities and events including: float building, pant the chant, paint the ‘ville, various social functions, wildcat request live and many others. At the conclusion of the week, all of the floats are pulled down Poyntz Ave. and the winners for the week are announced. These events promote the highest ideals of fraternity life and incorporate community service to help Manhattan and the college.
