Manhattan has approximately 45,000 residents and is located in Riley County in the northeast section of Kansas. Manhattan is 50 miles west of the state capital, Topeka, 125 miles west of Kansas City, and 10 miles east of the Fort Riley military post.

Manhattan's terrain is lush and picturesque. The city is in a large valley of the Flint Hills, noted for rolling countryside, big and little bluestem grasses, rocky outcroppings, cedar and oak forests, streams, rivers, and manmade lakes.

Situated in a university setting, Manhattan boasts several features of larger cities while maintaining the closeness of smaller communities. It is served by the third busiest airport in the state, providing shuttle flights to and from the Kansas City Airport. The cultural life of the city includes civic theater, chorale, chamber orchestra, and other organizations. Manhattan is home to Tuttle Creek State Park, a 1,125-acre recreation area housing one of the largest lakes in the Midwest. The city has a 12-screen movie theatre, one major shopping mall, and the Sunset Zoo. The tree-shaded streets, hills, water areas, and diverse indoor and outdoor activities of Manhattan make it a beautiful setting for students.
