Kansas State University, located in the city of Manhattan, KS, was founded in 1863. KSU offers many activities for its students and the surrounding community. There are abundant cultural activities sponsored by the university, including concert and theater series, speech communication productions, lecture series, and an art museum. The university also provides access to activities for the nature enthusiast, such as viewing the KSU Gardens and visiting the butterfly conservatory and insect zoo. Additionally, KSU ranks among the leading university athletic programs in the country, offering a variety of major college sports events.

Manhattan, KS

Manhattan has approximately 45,000 residents and is located in Riley County in the northeast section of Kansas. Manhattan is 50 miles west of the state capital, Topeka, 125 miles west of Kansas City, and 10 miles east of the Fort Riley military post.

Manhattan's terrain is lush and picturesque. The city is in a large valley of the Flint Hills, noted for rolling countryside, big and little bluestem grasses, rocky outcroppings, cedar and oak forests, streams, rivers, and manmade lakes.

Situated in a university setting, Manhattan boasts several features of larger cities while maintaining the closeness of smaller communities. It is served by the third busiest airport in the state, providing shuttle flights to and from the Kansas City Airport. The cultural life of the city includes civic theater, chorale, chamber orchestra, and other organizations. Manhattan is home to Tuttle Creek State Park, a 1,125-acre recreation area housing one of the largest lakes in the Midwest. The city has a 12-screen movie theatre, one major shopping mall, and the Sunset Zoo. The tree-shaded streets, hills, water areas, and diverse indoor and outdoor activities of Manhattan make it a beautiful setting for students.

Housing

KSU graduate students have access to several types of housing, many of which are low-cost. There are a large number of economically priced modern apartments and many private rentals off-campus in Manhattan. Apartments range from new complexes with swimming pools, tennis courts, and fireplaces to older houses that have been converted to apartments. Several hundred new apartment units have been constructed recently in Manhattan. Most of these housing possibilities are within a few blocks of campus and almost all are within easy walking and biking ranges. The Office of Student Activities and Services, K-State Union, (785) 532-6541, helps students locate off-campus housing.

Housing is also available on-campus, through the Department of Housing and Dining Services, Pittman Building, (785) 539-2097.Single students can obtain full board and room in the university residence halls (all of which are air conditioned). Two dormitories place special emphasis on an atmosphere conducive to studies and are especially designated for single graduate students and upper class undergraduates. The university's housing for married students is Jardine Terrace, a complex of 576 modern brick apartments located very near the campus. Furnished one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments that include gas and water are available. Each group of apartments has a central laundry and a large lawn and play area for children. Bus transportation for children is provided from Jardine Terrace to Manhattan's public schools.
