Kansas State University

Arts, Sciences, and Business
Mission Statement

The Arts, Science and Business Department provides a quality education in business, science, communication, mathematics, humanities and social science. This department also offers one baccalaureate degree program in the technology management field. The Arts, Science and Business faculty are committed to delivering quality undergraduate education for students seeking degrees in Engineering Technology and Aviation on the Salina campus as well as students seeking degrees in other fields from the main campus in Manhattan.

The department's instructional mission in these general education courses is to provide the students not only a strong educational foundation but also to teach the basic concepts of mathematics, science, and English required for advanced courses in Technology. Also, the department assists students in forming a strong academic foundation by initiating an Academic Achievement Center that provides tutoring and academic counseling. The success of these service courses is a direct result of the periodic revision of the programs' curriculum. This revision process, with input from program advisory committees and committed faculty, has proven very effective in adding and modifying service courses to meet the needs of business and industry.

The Arts, Science and Business Department's faculty expertise is increased through scholarship activities, including attending and presenting papers at national conferences, professional seminars and educational workshops. Several faculty members have received grants from NSF and the State of Kansas. Students benefit from these activities by the direct transfer of knowledge and skills from the faculty and by new and innovative teaching methods developed by the faculty.

The Arts, Science and Business faculty serves on university committees such as Faculty Senate, Faculty Affairs, Faculty Handbook, Undergraduate Education, and other committees. The faculty contributes to the profession by participating on state and national committees, peer review of papers and textbooks, and developing sections for new textbooks. Also the faculty is committed to community service through participation in Science Olympiad, Teen Women in Science and Technology, Kansas CPA's Committee, and the Kansas GIS Technical Advisory Committee. The Arts, Science and Business faculty also serve as elected officers in organizations such as Kansas Association of Teachers of English, Kansas Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and Geodetic Control Subcommittee for Kansas.
