Kansas State University

Graduate School

Based on a 1996 university strategic planning report, the Kansas State University Graduate School Governance program underwent some restructuring to address concerns highlighted in the report. These concerns centered on graduate education at K-State with particular emphasis on recruiting talented graduate students, increasing funds for graduate assistantships, and maintaining a high-quality graduate program consistent with the university mission and responsive to the needs of the Kansas citizens. Other issues were discussed which related to increasing communication between the groups and constituencies involved with the Graduate School ( i.e., graduate faculty, Graduate Council Representatives, university administrators, etc).

After obtaining feedback from various university councils and committees, and examining governance structures at other similar universities, a plan was constructed by the K-State Graduate Council to address these important issues. The plan was accepted and put in place several changes outlined as such:

  1. Increased the number of academic areas within the Graduate School; thus increasing the number and ratio of Graduate Council representatives to constituents.
  2. To assure diversity (educational and scholarly) is maintained at all Graduate Council deliberations, the structure of the Graduate Council was modified.
  3. Implemented a "mechanism" to facilitate and enhance communication between the Graduate Council and graduate faculty.

The K-State Graduate School will monitor the situation to determine if these changes were able to improve communication between Graduate Council and Graduate faculty.
