Arts and Sciences Distribution Requirements
This page supplements the official K-State UGE Site. Arts and Sciences maintains this page for its students and advisors. Please contact Shanna Pumphrey at spump@ksu.edu if you see errors or have questions.
UGE Philosophy (The Short Version)
Briefly stated, these requirements seek to ensure that all students...
- Gain adequate breadth of learning at K-State. This includes both diversity of knowledge and the ability to make connections between disciplines.
- Receive instruction guided by specific pedagogical practice. This includes an emphasis on active learning and an experiential context for the subject matter.
Please consult the FINAL PROPOSAL for General Education at K-State for more complete information regarding the UGE philosophy.
Who UGE Affects
UGE affects all K-State students not earning K-State or transfer credit before Fall 1997. Students earning any college credit anywhere before Fall 1997 are exempt from UGE.
The Nuts and Bolts
New students affected by UGE must take 18 hours of approved courses. Six of these must be 300 level or higher.
-
TRANSFER HOURS: UGE requirements change if you transfer eight or more hours to K-State.
Transfer hours taken after K-State matriculation still adjust your UGE obligation,
according to the table below. AP/IB/CLEP/DANTES credits do apply towards transfer
totals. Please note: all students must complete six hours UGE at 300 level or higher.

- Courses approved for UGE have been marked in the line schedule with a letter Y in the column designated GE. Only courses marked with that Y fill UGE requirements. We have also listed the approved UGE courses below.
- UGE courses can overlap completely with free electives and/or Basic Requirements for your college... but UGE courses cannot overlap your major curriculum. This means that switching programs could alter the number of UGE requirements you have completed.
- Students seeking dual degrees are only responsible for the UGE requirements associated with their primary major.
- Various colleges have added supplemental restrictions regarding how their students should satisfy UGE. If you switch programs, this might also affect your UGE standing. If you are not seeking your degree through Arts & Sciences, please contact your college for details.
Arts and Sciences Distribution Requirements
As of February 13, 2001, the College of Arts and Sciences has eliminated its restrictions on how UGE courses are distributed among different categories and different disciplines. This change is retroactive; no students are responsible for completing the previous distribution scheme. This change does not restrict individual departments from adding supplemental limitations regarding how UGE courses are distributed. You should always consult with your advisor regarding your UGE requirements.
