About Open Option

There are over 200 majors and programs to choose from at K-State - a wide range of choices! Many students initially declare Open Option while deciding which program best fits their talents and interests. Students can remain in Open Option for their first 60 hours (through the end of the sophomore year). Our program exists to help students (A) find an academic destination and (B) figure out the best way to get there!

Over 1500 students are typically enrolled in Open Option. At one time it was known as "Undeclared," but this was changed to reflect the active decision-making process that considering directional possibilities requires. We realize that students are exploring and weighing their options at K-State everyday.  Sixty percent of students change majors more than twice while at K-State. This fact suggests that many in degree programs are actually exploring too. Our goal is to provide an academically safer, more flexible alternative for that exploratory process.
