Communication is the transfer of information and knowledge.
Today, when communicating through Graphic Design, we
see a more complex process and world confronting students
and designers. It is the intention of the Graphic Design
faculty at Kansas State University to educate our students
and provide a solid foundation for communicating ideas
visually to an international community.
This graphic design foundation and education is based
on a human centeredness approach which goes beyond "just
training". A thorough graphic design experience
includes a strong foundation in the Arts and Sciences
and a pre-graphic design Visual Arts curriculum. The
A&S courses enhance our ability to solve problems
and provides an awareness and understanding of our constantly
changing world.
The pre-graphic design curriculum establishes a foundation
in the fundamentals of image making and organization
of space. The Graphic Design curriculum is based on
the understanding of problem solving relative to assigned
increasingly complex projects and experiences.
Students are encouraged to research, analyze, plan, create, execute/produce,
evaluate and refine during each level of study. Students
develop the ability to work in groups as well as individually
on design projects. In these situations design students
realize how to manage time and utilize resources to
solve creative problems.
Acquiring solid manual and technical skills relevant
to the tools and materials required for use in the design
field is critical. Technical insight and use is injected
into most Graphic Design courses. The merging of knowledge
and creative experiences in an academic environment
with industry processes/standards and culture is also
integral to the development of each student.
The
KSU program is an educational program designed to focus
on the issues of contemporary visual communications.
KSU prepares flexible designers for an international
community accentuated by accelerated changes in ideas/tools/technology.
Students also are encouraged to answer the question
of social responsibility in relation to design. They
must address the issue of what they create and its impact
on contemporary society.
After completing the Graphic Design program, students
will have developed a personal visual vocabulary. This
creative personal vision will enable them to contribute
to the future development of Graphic Design with their
ideas and visual concepts.
"Graphic design is the profession that plans and
executes the design of visual communication according
to the needs of audiences and in the context for which
communication is intended." (American Institute
of Graphic Design)
"Graphic designers apply what they have learned
about physical, cognitive, social, and cultural human
factors to communication planning and the creation of
appropriate form that interprets, informs, instructs,
and persuades. Graphic designers use various technologies
as means for creating visual form and as an environment
through which communication takes place. Graphic designers
plan, analyze, create, and evaluate visual solutions
to communication problems. Their work ranges from the
development of strategies to solve large-scale communications
problems, to the design of effective communication products,
such as publications, computer programs, packaging,
exhibits, and signage." (National Association of
Schools of Art and Design )
