1998
Faenza, Italy Summer Program in Ceramics through
Kansas State University
History
of the Program
The first program was in 1989 followed biennially in 1992, 1994
and 1996. It
has matured into a very successful program, affording
students from
all parts of the U.S. and Canada with a variety of backgrounds
and
opportunity to work in clay while being exposed to the
world of
Italian ceramics with its long and rich history.
The
Curriculum
This 3-week summer program will be held at the Istituto
Statale
d'Arte per la Ceramica. The Istituto is an internationally
known ceramics school which draws upon a tradition of
ceramics in
Faenza dating back to the Middle Ages. The program will
consist
of a 3 credit hour course in studio ceramics. Each student
will
be able to take this course for either undergraduate
or graduate
credit from Kansas State University.
Students
can study ceramics on a variety of levels from Ceramics
II
through Advanced Ceramics. Instruction will be tailored
to meet
the needs of the individual student based on previous
experience.
Work will be done in earthenware clay with majolica
glazes, using
hand building and/or wheel throwing techniques. Traditional
majolica decoration is covered along with other decorative
techniques.
The
use of Istituto's splendid facility is further enhanced
by the
availability of their faculty for several workshops,
demonstrations
and lectures, such as majolica decoration, conservation
and ceramic
art history, as well as visits to the studios of local
artists.
The students have unlimited access to the International
Museum of
Ceramics which has one of the largest collections of
historical
ceramics in the world.
Faenza
is a flourishing northern Italian city in the
Emiglia-Romagna region. It is a world center for ceramics
and
its influence is visible at every turn. Students and
faculty
reside in a local albergo (hotel) and partake in the
main meal
of the day at a neighborhood restaurant serving the
fine food of
the region.
