Visiting Artist & Designer Activities

Fusion Week: A Prairie View
Annually the Visual Communication Division of the Department of Art schedules a series of speakers funded by the K-State Student Fine Arts fee. This year, Fusion Week: A Prairie View, focuses on designers and artists who reside or were born in the region.

One of the goals of the visual communication program is to teach creativity, creatively. This approach constantly demands that we find a way to present breakthrough experiences for our students. We see Fusion Week as one of the breakthrough opportunities.

Filmmaker Kevin Willmott started Fusion Week with a discussion of his new film CSA (Confederate States of America). CSA will be distributed nationally in late spring 2005 and made and appearance at the Sundance Film Festival. In addition, a viewing of his earlier film, Ninth Street took place.

Larry Schwarm, an award winning photographer whose recent book dynamically explores the beauty and subtly of the prairie, was Fusion Week's next presenter.

Next, Craig Goodman, originally from Manhattan and now working with Insomniacs in Los Angeles, provided insight into the computer-interactive gaming world.

Finally, Designers Megan Calcara and Kristen Swofford from award winning Muller + Co. in Kansas City presented Thursday. The provided insight into the design culture of Muller and work they have been developing over the last few years.
