Metals
Area Hard at Work
Over
the past year the metals department has been very busy.
The Kansas State University Metalsmithing Society hosted
their fifth annual Repair Days in April, 2002. The society
was honored to have visiting artist Jim Cotter of Vail,
CO, as their master metalsmith for this event. As always,
alumni such as Steve Jordan, OH, Michael Roach, KS,
Azalea Whitley, KS and Lee Halgen, IA, return to lend
an extra helping hand. Mother nature was kind enough
to give us a wonderful weekend full of sun, which helped
the society raise just a little over two thousand dollars.
The summer was a fairly relaxing one for the students
and Professor Pujol. Students Miles Olsen and Eric Ryser
attended a summer class at Penland School of Crafts
in Penland, NC. The class was a two week long session
dealing in Damascus steel with bladesmith J.D. Smith
of Boston, MA.
Shortly before we knew it, the long, hot days of summer
were behind us and the students were already two weeks
into the fall semester. Students were back at their
benches and the ring of the anvil could be heard all
the way down the third floor hallway. In September,
students Emily Lebsack, Miles Olsen, Eric Ryser and
Professor Pujol attended the Carbondale Metals Conference
in Carbondale, IL. There they participated in a demonstration
and slide lecture by Swedish Blacksmith Christoph Friederich.
Then October came around which could only mean one thing,
Repair Days in Memphis. This is always an exciting trip
for the students, because it gives them a chance to
meet other artists and a chance to show off their repair
skills. Toward the end of the semester, in November,
the KSUMS welcomed blacksmith and full-time business
owner John Medwedeff for a demonstration and slide lecture.
The
next three months are busy ones for the Metalsmithing
society. In February, students plan to put on a ring-making
workshop just in time for Valentine’s Day. Then
once again, in April, the department is proud to announce
their 6th annual Repair Days. This year’s master
Metalsmith for Repair Days will be James Wallace, who
is currently director of the National Ornamental Metal
Museum in Memphis, TN. Jim will be giving a slide lecture
and hopefully we can talk him into a little forging
demonstration while we have him here.
2003
Winegardner Medal Competition
This
spring 25 of our top Visual Communication students from
five different courses took part in the first ever group-based
Winegardner Medal Competition. The project that each
team of five participated in this year was to develop
a system of elements revolving around ‘the designers
survival kit’ as the theme. The competition took
place over a two-week time span in which several dynamic
and thoughtful presentations were assembled and then
submitted for judging. Awards were handed out to the
winning team during the Art Department Awards Dinner.
