New
KSU Painting Society visits Chicago and KC
The
KSU Painting Society was formed in the Spring of 2002
by advanced painting students Carol Sprawka,
Adam Hayes, Anna Lambert and Jenny Meyer under the guidance
of Professor Xuhong Shang. The society sponsored and
organized a three day trip to Art Chicago last spring.
The trip gave ten art students an opportunity to visit
one of the largest art centers in the country. They
saw contemporary work from many of the top galleries
from around the globe as well as masterworks in Chicago’s
museums. The society’s goal is to give art students
an opportunity to interact with each other outside of
class, show
their work, share ideas and learn about different methods
of making art. They will learn to develop their skills
and conceptual abilities as artists through society-sponsored
events, trips and get-togethers. This year the society
held two shows (one on and one off campus), brought
in one visiting artist from Illinois, and traveled to
Kansas City to visit the Kemper and Nelson Art Museums.
The society is currently planning for the K-State Open
House events, and other visiting artists and a possible
second trip to Art Chicago.
A
Fine Evening for the Annual Awards Dinner
The
Annual Awards Dinner, April 3, 2003, was hosted at the
new K-State Alumni Center and was a great success. Besides
the excellent buffet from Cox Brothers Bar-B-Q, the
place was packed with well over one hundred guests and
award winners in attendance. Great community and historical
support turned out. Barbara and Jay Nelson of Strecker-Nelson
Gallery initiated a new institution as graduate award
donors, honoring Donna Cole, graduate student in ceramics
with a cash award, exhibition and representation at
the gallery. Penny Cullers represented Varney’s
Bookstore, a figure in both scholarship and material
awards every year. Mary Helm Pollock, one of our Art
Department Patrons, joined the party from New York City.
Very welcome were departmental emeritus faculty members
Oscar Larmer, Jack O’Shea, Carroll Winegardner,
Rosella Ogg and Gary Woodward, who has been moonlighting
as a graduate recruitment officer for the department.
Students who received scholarships in the Fall 2002
semester were announced and recognized as well as those
students who received awards for the Commerce Bank juried
Comprehensive Exhibition. Commerce Bank provides a venue
for an exhibition of the juried pieces, and presents
monetary awards to the top student each year.
