As a part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Art follows the College mission objectives very closely. The mission of the College is fourfold: to take the lead in providing a high quality liberal arts foundation for all Kansas State University students; to promote graduate education and scholarly/research activities; to promote high quality undergraduate programs for its own majors; and to provide service to the disciplines, state and nation.
The Department of Art has twenty-one artist/faculty and two art historians committed to education in the visual arts. A full-time art advisor also serves the approximately 450 undergraduates and 25 graduate students. These student numbers make us one of the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and one of the most popular in the University. The Department of Art is currently housed in three buildings - renovations and a move to consolidate all the art and design classes together in Willard Hall are occurring over the next few years. The faculty is committed to teaching and equally devoted to their scholarly work in creative production. The artist faculty exhibits widely throughout the United States and abroad, as the art historians publish original research in highly respected international journals in their fields. Their work exemplifies the diversity of approach to art and design in a global world, go to http://www.k-state.edu/art/faculty/bios/index.html.
Kansas State University is located in Manhattan, Kansas, a two-hour drive west of Kansas City. Situated in the beautiful rolling Flint Hills, it is the oldest land grant university in the United States, established in 1863. The campus buildings are all constructed of native limestone spanning 150 years of architectural styles. The university includes nine colleges and all the benefits of an international research university, with a diverse faculty from around the world and 23,000 students from all 50 states and 90 countries. The campus Beach Museum of Art, showing international and regional contemporary art, just opened a 17,000 square foot addition in October 2007, www.ksu.edu/bma.
