Over the past few years, I have found the interaction among
working artists to be an ideal way of exploring potential
theories of art, identifying problems, and finding solutions
to issues facing artists today. In teaching art, I have
found it beneficial to incorporate this attitude into
the classroom. I ask that my students establish positive
communication among themselves, and develop the fundamental
skills I stress in a personal and conceptual manner.
One of my goals in teaching painting, drawing, or design
is to establish a supportive atmosphere among my students
that inspires personal initiative and promotes a growth
of understanding. Again, positive communication and
a sense of responsibility is essential to the unfolding
of a student's imagination and curiosity.
A final goal of mine in teaching painting, drawing or
design is to help the student locate his or her individual
direction. I am aware that teaching art requires meeting
the needs of a wide variety of different sensibilities.
I am more than willing to take the time to understand
the individual on his or her own level, and present
any knowledge or information I have. I feel that a studio
environment that is conducive to free and positive interaction
can help reduce any sense of alienation a student may
feel. The freedom to take risks and encounter error
is an important role in providing the student with a
valuable source of information in locating individual
direction.
