Domestic Violence Awareness
Nationally, Alpha Chi Omegas support the victims of domestic violence. Members
donate, volunteer, and work to change laws in our efforts to eliminate domestic
violence.
The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the national fraternity and provides support to individual members, to chapters across the country, and to the Fraternity in the form of educational grants. The Foundation supports many educational programs for its members including Leadership Academy for the chapter presidents and IMPACT Alpha Chi Omega.
Manhattan Crisis Center
The Gamma Zeta chapter locally supports the Manhattan Crisis Center: a place where women and children that are victims of domestic violence can find shelter and can get help starting a new life. All of the proceeds from Gamma Zeta philanthropies go to support the Crisis center and we have also held clothing and toiletry drives to donate to the center. Several members of Gamma Zeta have volunteered at the center as well.

Best of the MidwestThis philanthropy took place in April 2007 and was a brand new philanthropy tradition that included fraternities and sororities from K-State and fraternities from surrounding Kansas schools (Baker, Emporia, KU, Pitt State, and Washburn). Each chapter competed in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. We were able to donate 100 dollars as well as 80 dollars in Applebees gift cards to the Manhattan Crisis Center.
Philanthropy Day during Formal Recruitment
This past year during Formal Recruitment, our chapter members brought over 300 dollars worth of personal care products to donate to the Manhattan Crisis Center. Before the donation, the young women going through Recruitment placed them in personal care bags with encouraging notes to the women staying at the Crisis Center.
Ali Kemp Bandstand/TAKE Self-DefenseThis year partnered with Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Tau Omega to help raise funds and awareness for the T.A.K.E foundation (The Ali Kemp Foundation). Other Greek houses that also helped included Chi Omega, Lambda Chi, and Sigma Epsilon. This was the first year that seven Greek houses came together to help plan Ali Kemp Bandstand/TAKE Self Defense Class. This philanthropy was started in memory of a Pi Beta Phi that lost her life in 2003 after being brutally murdered. The philanthropy consists of a bandstand, which allowed local bands to perform, while we raise money for the T.A.K.E. Foundation, in Ali’s memory. The T.A.K.E. Foundation is dedicated to educating young women in self-defense techniques. By selling t-shirts, donations from raffles and various community supporters, we raised money for this foundation. During the event, Kansas State University students were able to enjoy the entertainment, while also learning about Ali and the T.A.K.E. Foundation. Roger Kemp, Ali’s father, came to talk about the Foundation, Jill Leiker (Executive Director) put on a self-defense class), and held a candle light ceremony was held in Bosco Student Plaza to remember and honor Ali. This philanthropy took place on October 4, 2007 and $4,575.00 was raised to donate to the T.A.K.E. Foundation. |
| National Luminary Project October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Alpha Chi’s put on an awareness event for students at K-State on October 13, 2007 in Bosco Student Plaza. We put on the National Luminary Project and displayed candles and facts about domestic violence. The Manhattan, KS director of Youth for Christ came to speak about her personal experiences with domestic violence and the ways that she works other women learn more so that they are able to protect themselves and their children. As a chapter, we were able to donate 200 dollars worth of personal care products to the women and children that are receiving guidance and aid from Manhattan Youth for Christ. |
Lighting Up the Little Apple 2007 marked the second annual “Lighting Up the Little Apple.” Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Chi worked with us on planning the philanthropy which is a holiday light competition between the Greek houses on campus. We had three different competitions, a sorority competition, a fraternity competition and a competition with the Greek out of houses. Each house was judged on “most traditional”, “brightest”, and “overall creativity”. Judges included the house mothers from Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Tau Omega, and Sigma Chi, Bill Muir, Alpha Tau Omega advisor and Women’s basketball player Shalee Lehning. The houses were judged during the week of November 26-29, and winners were announced on the 30th of November. Approximately 1000 dollars was raised and we were able to donate all the proceeds to the Crisis Center. |
| Adopt a Family Christmas 2007 As a chapter we adopted families from the Crisis Center. Each family had two children and their mothers that we were able to go shopping for. Chapter members donated money and time to provide Christmas gifts for these families. The members of Alpha Chi Omega donated $280 to buy gifts for both of our families. Community Service Alpha Chi Omegas participate in community service activities throughout the year and have logged over 500 this past semester! |
