CREDITS

What is a credit hour?
The amount of credit hours students will receive for a course is related to the amount of time students spend in class. Most classes are three credit hours, which generally means the course meets three times a week for 50 minutes, two times a week for 75 minutes, or once a week for 150 minutes. Lab sections meet at additional times, and lab credit is figured differently.

How many credit hours are considered full-time?
Students need twelve credit hours to be considered full-time. If students have specific concerns related to insurance, financial aid or housing they should be directed to the appropriate office for details.

CLASSES

Should students take Expository Writing their first semester?
Students may or they may wait a semester or two.

Do students need to complete all the basic requirements before they can take classes for their major?
Because many major courses do have prerequisites, students need to complete selected basics before they get too far into your major. However, there is no need to complete all basics before starting anything else. Students can start exploring their major and completing major requirements as soon as they have the prerequisites.

Which classes are easy?
Advisors rarely give a direct answer to this question, because the answer relates more to the student than the classroom. What is your learning style? What are your study habits? What subjects are strongest for you? What type of assessment do you prefer? All these things determine whether students find the class "easy" or "difficult." These are very subjective terms!

M

(MAJOR) DEGREE TRACK

When do students need to make a decision about majors?
Students are required to declare a major and move out of Open Option by the time they have completed 60 credit hours (by the end of the sophomore year). Encourage students to set a goal to choose a major prior to the end of the freshman year. However, some students do not make their decision about a major until they are sophomores, and most of these students will still be able to graduate in about four years.

What resources are available to help students make a decision about majors?
The Academic and Career Information Center is a really good place for students to begin.  Their website includes information about career assessments, K-State majors, and what one can do with a major in various programs.

What is the procedure for declaring a major or changing majors?
Go to the Deans’ Office and request a change of curriculum form. It is important to understand that K-State policy requires a 2.0 GPA to move between Colleges, and some programs impose additional restrictions and/or criteria.

MINORS

What is the procedure for declaring a minor?
Students declare minor(s) with the department/academic unit that offers that minor. Even if students complete the right courses, nothing appears on the transcript unless students file with the department/academic unit. Students will need to consult their Department Office regarding the correct paperwork.

MODERN LANGUAGE

Where do students learn about the placement testing in Modern Language?
Students who have had previous language training in high school, at home, or through living abroad should take the department's placement examination. The test is administered in the Language Learning Center, Eisenhower Hall 001 (785-532-1930). It generally takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete, and may be taken at any time during the LLC's regular hours of operation.

Generally, one year of high school language study corresponds to one semester of college study. If a student has had, for example, two years of a foreign language in high school, he or she would most likely enroll in a third-semester course (III) in that language.

Students with no previous foreign language experience begin their language study by enrolling in the elementary course (I) of the chosen language, and need not take the placement exam. EXCEPTION: A letter of permission is required in order to enroll in Spanish 1. In order to receive permission, students must present their Spanish placement test scores at the Modern Languages Office, Eisenhower 104. Only those students who have never taken Spanish will be given permission without having taken the placement test.
(For more information, see http://www.k-state.edu/mlangs/Students/FAQ.html#placement)

How do students learn about Advanced Placement Credit in Modern Language?
The Advanced Placement test is one way to earn college credit by examination. The College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) gives these tests in May of the junior or senior year, in high schools offering advanced placement courses. Prospective K-State students who take these tests should request that a copy of their scores be sent to the Kansas State University Office of Admissions in order to receive credit.
(For more information, see http://www.k-state.edu/mlangs/Students/FAQ.html#freshman)

How and where can students learn about retroactive credit in Modern Languages?
Free, non-graded retroactive credit is available for those students who begin their language studies in courses beyond the Level-I course. For each course completed with a C or better, a student may apply to receive retroactive credit for one lower-level course. For example, a student who successfully completes Spanish II may apply for retroactive credit for Spanish I. A student who completes French III and IV may receive credit for French I and II. A student who tests into the 500-level in German may receive credit for German I, II, III, and IV upon successful completion of four 500-level German courses.

Retroactive credit applications are available in the Modern Languages Office, and also online.
(For more information, please contact or visit the Department of Modern Languages 104 Eisenhower, 785-532-6760.)

O

OPEN OPTION

How do students declare Open Option in Arts and Sciences? Students should fill out a Change of Major in the college where they are currently enrolled. Next, students should go to the Registrar for TWO transcripts, required to start a file. There is no charge for changing majors. Then, students should go to Arts & Sciences (Eisenhower 113) to complete paperwork.

What if a student knows the general field of interest but not a specific major? Most colleges at K-State also have general programs. For example, if a student is leaving Horticultural Therapy but knows other choices still relate to Agriculture, students might change into the General Agriculture program rather than Open Option.

S

STUDY ABROAD

Can students still study abroad if they do not know the language?
There are many programs available in English in both English-speaking countries and non-English-speaking countries. Students can study in English in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Fiji, Tonga, the Sandwich Islands and many other places.

Studying abroad can give students the opportunity to learn a foreign language or to improve skills in a language you already know. Numerous programs offer beginning and intermediate language instruction. Some students can finish their entire four semesters of language credit in one semester overseas. Studying a language overseas is the single best way to learn, since students are immersed in the foreign culture daily.

Will students be able to graduate on time if they study abroad? Studying abroad should not delay a student’s graduation. Classes match K-State requirements so that a student’s education will not take additional time. Most students are able to take courses in their major while they study abroad. Almost all fields can be studied abroad, although students may not find every field of study at every location.

What GPA do students need to study abroad? Many programs have a GPA requirement of 2.50. Some language programs have no GPA requirements at all.

Will students get credit for courses while studying abroad? What if a student’s grades are bad? All classes taken abroad transfer back as credit. If students take twelve or eighteen hours of classes abroad, students will receive that much credit. All classes abroad are taken pass/fail, so your study abroad experience will not affect your GPA.

T

TRANSCRIPTS

How can students get transcripts?
A transcript is a certified, official copy of student’s permanent record. Since it contains confidential information, it cannot be released to anyone other than the student without written permission unless it is being mailed directly to another university from the K-State Registrar's Office. Students can order a transcript by mail or fax. Students can send a written request to the Registrar's Office, Kansas State University, 118 Anderson Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-0114, FAX (785)532-5599.

U

UGE

What is UGE?
UGE stands for University General Education.

How many UGE credits do students need to graduate?
Most students will need 18 hours of UGE credit; at least 6 hours of UGE credit must be at the 300 level or higher. Requirements for transfer students vary. Colleges, departments, and individual students may choose to extend general education studies beyond the University's minimum requirement. The University General Education plan encourages general education study across most, if not all, of the undergraduate years. Thus, at least one-third of students' UGE programs must be upper division courses/experiences approved for UGE credit.

Does a student have to meet UGE requirements for an Associates Degree?
Each associate degree program requires at least 6 hours of approved UGE courses. Courses accepted for UGE credit will vary according to college and major.

Where can I find an annotated list of UGE courses?
Not all courses are offered each semester. Consult the list of UGE courses offered for the current enrollment semester.

How do I know the course allows UGE credit?
A diamond before the course number in the online Course Schedule and the Undergraduate Catalog designates UGE courses.

What is the benefit of UGE courses?
To be truly effective in life and in a career, each student must seek a breadth of education that reaches far beyond the course work specifically designed for a major. University General Education increases the opportunity students have at Kansas State University to get the most from their education. Students and advisors should consider carefully which courses and experiences would be best to help explore new ideas and balance the specific focus of a major with the rest of the world of knowledge.

What is the UGE policy for Credit by Examination?
Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate Programs (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support (DANTES) credits may be considered "transfer credits" for purposes of the UGE Policy for Students Transferring Credit to Kansas State University.

V

VISITING

How do I arrange a visit to the K-State campus?
Prospective students can call 1-800-432-8270 (toll free) or 785-532-6250 to set up a visit. Admissions representatives can even cater the visit to individuals based on majors, activities, and living options of interest.
