American Ethnic Studies

As explicitly stated in the department’s informational brochure, “American Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the historical, political, social, and cultural realities that have shaped the development of America’s diverse ethnic populations.”  In today’s culturally diverse world, a major in American Ethnic Studies would be a valuable asset.  The major provides students with a broad liberal arts education, leading to the development of skills like critical thinking, effective communication, comparative analysis, and general social theory.  Students will be required to take a required core of American Ethnic Studies courses, but will have the option to take courses from a number of different disciplines, including anthropology, philosophy, sociology, geography, history, English, and other foreign languages.  With the appropriate additional training, students in American Ethnic Studies will be well prepared to competitively pursue careers in education, law, medicine, public health, public relations, journalism, politics, social work, business, counseling, and more.
