Copyright Notice
Intellectual Property Information Center at Kansas State UniversityOnline Tutorial on Copyright Basics
Most of us are familiar with notices of copyright, such as Copyright 1999 Jane Jones, or © 1999 Jones. What most people don’t realize is that, effective March 1, 1989, U.S. law no longer requires the use of a copyright notice on new works.
However, if you wish to put a copyright notice on your work you still can, but it is recommended that you follow guidelines on the form and positioning of the notice which are found in the Copyright Office’s Circular 1.
If you are putting notice of copyright on a phonorecord (meaning cassette tapes, LP’s, CD’s…) the notice should contain a “P” in a circle, not the familiar © symbol.
