The Senior Scholar Retirement Program

Kansas State University is pleased to announce the Senior Scholar Retirement Program. The Senior Scholar Retirement Program is designed to enable K-State to continue to benefit from its senior, highly qualified, experienced faculty members who may want to reduce their time commitment to the university. Two programs have been developed to assist in this process: the Senior Scholar Position and the current Phased Retirement Program. Below is a general description of these programs.

The Senior Scholar Position

The Senior Scholar Position is offered, at the discretion of the Provost, to highly qualified teachers and scholars. To participate in this program faculty must be nominated by their dean and possess a record of outstanding achievement and productivity.

Those selected to participate in this program officially retire and then are rehired on a senior scholar position at a percent of their pre-retirement salary. This program permits faculty to retain many of their rights and privileges (faculty rates for off-campus Internet access, office space, faculty rates for campus parking privileges, library use, faculty rates for cultural and athletic events, etc.) as faculty members. In some instances, faculty may be able to replace or exceed their full-time pre-retirement income while reducing their time commitment.

Phased Retirement Program

This program allows faculty an opportunity to phase retirement over a selected period of time. It is open to all benefit-eligible faculty who have attained the age of 55 and who have completed at least 10 years of service with one or more of the Regent's institutions.

The faculty member's salary is reduced but benefits (health insurance, death and disability coverage, retirement contributions) stay at the full-time or current rate. Provided they are eligible, faculty may elect to partially annuitize their retirement funds while continuing to make retirement contributions. Faculty members must retire at the end of the agreement period, not to exceed five years. Faculty members wishing to participate in this program should submit a written request to their department head.
