Checklist and Standards for
Notice of Reappointment and Non-Reappointment

 

First Year of Academic Service

For those in the first year of service, notice of non-reappointment must be given no later than March 1 if the appointment expires at the end of that year. If a one-year appointment expires during an academic year then notice of non-reappointment must be made at least 3 months in advance of its termination.  Dean forwards recommendation to the Provost.

Second Year of Academic Service

Sept/ Early Oct
Candidate prepares evaluation materials and submits file to Department Head/Chair. (C52)
Mid Oct
Documents made available for review by department faculty. (C53.1)
Late Oct/ Early Nov
Department faculty meet to discuss reappointment at least 14 days after documents made available to faculty. (C53.1)
 
Faculty may ask to meet with candidate. (C53.1)
 
Faculty submit recommendations to department head/chair. (C53.1)
 
Ballot of faculty conducted for reappointments. (C53.1)
Early-Mid Nov
Department head/chair submits recommendation to Dean. (C53.3)
 
Department head/chair's recommendation is forwarded to candidate. Head/chair meets with candidate. (C53.3)
Dec 15
Dean notifies department head/chair and candidate of reappointment recommendation. (C56)
  NOTE: University Handbook Appendix A indicates that notice of non-reappointment must be given "Not later than December 15 of the second academic year of service, if the appointment expires at the end of that year; or, if an initial two-year appointment terminates during an academic year, at least six months in advance of its termination."
Dec 20
Dean forwards recommendation to the Provost. (C54)

 

After Two or More Years of Academic Service

Dec/Jan
Candidate prepares evaluation materials and submits file to Department Head/Chair. (C52)
Early-Mid Feb
Documents made available for review by department faculty. (C53.1)
Late Feb/ Early Mar
Department faculty meet to discuss reappointment at least 14 days after documents made available to faculty. (C53.1)

Dean notifies department head/chair and candidate of reappointment recommendation. (C56)
  NOTE: University Handbook Appendix A indicates that notice of non-reappointment must be given "At least 12 months before the expiration of an appointment after two or more years at the institution."
May 21
Dean forwards recommendation to the Provost. (C54)
