2013 Education Achievements
* The College of Education's Susan Yelich Biniecki, assistant professor of educational leadership, and Waldek Biniecki, instructor at the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy, received one award and three special recognitions at the Polish Independence Day/Veterans Day event in Milwaukee: Congressman Clement Zablocki Civic Achievement Award from the Polish American Congress; Certificate of Recognition for Dedicated Service from the consulate general of the Republic of Poland in Chicago; Milwaukee County Resolution Recognizing Civic Achievement from the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors; and City of Milwaukee Resolution Recognizing Civic Achievement from the city of Milwaukee Common Council. The honors are for the Binieckis' work in raising awareness Central Europe and its role in history, as well as its dynamic economy and acclaimed educational system. December 2013
* Doris Wright Carroll, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, received the Cultural Competency Award from the Kansas City chapter of the Nation’s Voice on Mental Illness. The award is given to key people in the community who have had a positive influence in the field of mental health awareness and advocacy. November 2013
* Jessica Bauerle, junior in elementary education, received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad. Bauerle's study abroad destination is Ghana. The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards up to $5,000 for undergraduates to study abroad. Award recipients are chosen through a competitive selection process. May 2013
* The Go Teacher scholarship program coordinated by Kansas State University received the 2013 Exceptional Noncredit Program Award at the Association for Continuing Higher Education’s Great Plains region conference. Go Teacher is a scholarship program developed to enhance the English proficiency of teachers in Ecuador and provide them with instruction to improve teaching effectiveness in teaching English as a second language methodologies. In addition, Go Teacher scholars experience the culture of the language. April 2013
* The College of Education was included in U.S. News & World Report's 2014 Best Graduate School ranking, making it among the best in the nation. March 2013
* David Thompson, professor and chair of the department of educational leadership, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Education Finance Conference, a community of scholars devoted to the study and improvement of education funding structures in the United States and other countries. The recognition applauds the efforts of individuals who devote their professional career and energy to funding education for all learners. February 2013.
* The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education presented Amanda Morales, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, with its 2013 Outstanding Dissertation Award. Morales was selected for her study of factors of resiliency, persistence and racial uplift among nontraditional, Latina English language learners in teacher education. February 2013.
