* A Program for Underrepresented Students *

Requirements

An underrepresented student who is on academic probation needs to meet the following requirements of the Academic Transition Program to remove the probational status:

  • Draft an academic contract with the academic counselor and set up three goals to improve semester and cumulative GPAs.
  • Meet with the academic counselor monthly to follow-up progress.

We are here to

  • Stand by to support and make sure the transition period goes smoothly for the student.
  • Keep the student informed of academic resources and important policies.
  • Set up realistic goals and develop a study habit that helps boost up the student’s grades.
  • Provide each student with academic and emotional support.
  • Direct students to resources that can make the academic pursuit effective.

 We are NOT here to

  • Make a student feel like he or she is failing school.
Fact: Most students are here because they had a bad semester, not because they are “bad” students.
  • Create some busy work for the student.
Fact: Students who learned to use our service more, reported feeling supported and well-informed about campus resources.  They learned how to deal with difficult semesters and made the best out of their experience.
  • Make the student work harder than he or she can or wants.
Fact: On the contrary, we believe that students have the ability to be their own boss.  What we learned from working with the students in the past was that by better organizing or increasing effort on some areas, GPAs can be improved.  We are here to assist in focusing on strengths and directing effective effort to areas needing adjustment so the new semester will be a successful experience.

So, what’s involved?

Academic contract

We will help the student set up realistic goals for the new semester.

Bi-weekly or monthly meetings

We meet periodically with the student to make sure things are going smoothly.  When a student keeps his or her commitment to academic counseling, he or she stays informed with resources, school policies, and important deadlines.

Confidentiality

The discussions about a student’s academic progress are confidential.

Directing resources

We direct a student to the resources (tutoring services, placement exams, scholarships, loans, change majors, etc.) he or she needs.

Easy planning

We assess a student’s academic progress and project how his or her effort will reflect on academic performance.  Planning can be easier!

Follow-up and support

We are here to support the student academically and emotionally.
