Network Usage Statistics
Below are brief descriptions of the networks utilized by K-State, with links to graphs that illustrate network traffic.
Great Plains Network (GPN) - This is the network from which K-State gets its Internet1 and Internet2 service. Both Internet1 and Internet2 share a DS-3 circuit (45 Mbps) between K-State and the GPN. It is a full-duplex network, meaning there is 45 Mbps of bandwidth for both incoming and outgoing data. In the following graphs, blue lines represent network traffic (in Mbps) into K-State. Green lines represent network traffic (in Mbps) leaving K-State.
Abilene Network - The Abilene Network and the "very high performance Backbone Network Service" (vBNS) comprise the Internet2 backbone. K-State connects to Abilene through the Great Plains Network. Internet2 sites on the vBNS are reached through "peering points" that interconnect Abilene and the vBNS. For further information on the operational status of Abilene, visit their Network Operations Center.
vBNS - The original backbone network of Internet2. The Abilene Network came later, and complements vBNS. The vBNS is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and operated by MCI Worldcom, Inc.
Active Measurement Program
Kansas State participates in the NLANR Active Measurement Program (AMP). This program shows round-trip times in milliseconds and packet loss between K-State and all other Internet2 schools participating in AMP. For example, if you wanted to find out how well the connection is working between K-State and the University of Missouri, look at the row labelled "amp-missouri".
